Our approved projects for 2009:
|
- Building a shelter for patients near the only hospital in a small city 360 KM from the capital of Brazil. This shelter will accommodate 7,300 patients a year as they recuperate prior to returning to their villages. We have already secured free land usage, engineering services, tax waivers and local day to day operating volunteers. All we need is funding for building materials. Our goal of $10,000 would put us in basic operation mode to begin housing the poor and sick individuals who are currently forced to sleep on the sidewalk.
- Expanding the capacity of vital nonprofit daycare in an impoverished area called Lixao (“Big Dump”) where currently 95 kids are being helped. However hundreds more are on the waiting list and living under horrible conditions. A small contribution could increase the number of children we can remove from dangerous and unsafe conditions, including exposure to toxic substances, rodents, flies, exposed nails, raw sewage and human refuse.
- Embarking on more medical missions. A team of volunteer plastic surgeons from our first project operated on 75 disfigured children and adults in the northeast of Brazil and they are ready to go again! Reconstructive surgery is a real-life miracle in the lives of so many unfortunate patients ostracized from their own society and who would otherwise never have a shot at a normal life. Along with birth defects, a high number of these deformities are caused by severe burning due to the lack of emergency services available in this area.
- Providing educational supplies for a small school in the poorest slum of a small inland city of Minas Gerais state serving 150 disadvantaged kids. Our donor^s generosity have provided the school with a much needed a copy machine which replaced their outdated mimeographs, and greatly increased the amount of educational materials they can produce. We also provided one laptop per classroom but as you can imagine does not allow enough time for teacher and children needs. They could use more computers, school supplies, sports as well as gently used clothes and shoes. Angels For Brazil picks up donations in the Bay Area, please call 650-245-6506
Escola Sao Rafael

The School of St. Rafael
The School of St. Rafael is an initiative started by low-income parents living in a rural area without schools. They strived for a spiritual and solid moral foundation for their children, but without resources while living in a geographic area with small a population in the center of Brazil (about 199 miles south-west of the capital Brasilia), they didn't have any scholastic options until forming St. Rafael. The school complies with all rules and curriculum despite not receiving any public funds to operate.
The school teaches 155 children from the ages of 5 to 15 (kindergarten through ninth grade of primary school), while providing students the foundation and attitudes they will be able to use in the world they will walk in afterwards.
There are many more parents who would like to send their children to the school, but they can't afford the taxes required to cover the bare minimum expenses to operate the school. Although the cost may seem low, it is an expense they cannot pay:
The cost is $45 (US) for each child or $540 (US) per year, $37.50 (US) when two children come from the same family, $30 (US) if there are three children from the same family and $25 (US) per child for four or more children from the same family. Some mothers help as volunteers and clean the school to pay the fee. The facility could hold up to 180 children, once the tax per child is donated.
Having this mission, the school makes a particular effort for a total education, not just by classes, but through atmosphere and celebration, following principles of charity, love, patience, commitment, moral, honor, respect, acceptance, cooperation, etc. This loving environment has brought many positive changes and the staff has seen troubled kids become positively engaged while growing into leaders and good role models for the younger children.
The Education program is formed according the requirements of the City to which this region belongs to and the State it is in, but does not receive any financial support. Please donate any amount or commit to making an ongoing difference in the lives of these rural kids by donating $25 to $45 monthly. Simply click the donate now icon on the mail page or send a check payable to Angels For Brazil (mail to P.O. Box 4922 Foster City, CA 94404). 100% of donations are applied directly to cover the tax for each child.
