Building a shelter for patients near the only hospital in a small city 360 KM from the capital of Brazil. This shelter will accommodate 7,300 patients a year as they recuperate prior to returning to their villages. We have already secured free land usage, engineering services, tax waivers and local day to day operating volunteers. All we need is funding for building materials. Our goal of $10,000 would put us in basic operation mode to begin housing the poor and sick individuals who are currently forced to sleep on the sidewalk.
Expanding the capacity of vital nonprofit daycare in an impoverished area called Lixao (“Big Dump”) where currently 95 kids are being helped. However hundreds more are on the waiting list and living under horrible conditions. A small contribution could increase the number of children we can remove from dangerous and unsafe conditions, including exposure to toxic substances, rodents, flies, exposed nails, raw sewage and human refuse.
Embarking on more medical missions. A team of volunteer plastic surgeons from our first project operated on 75 disfigured children and adults in the northeast of Brazil and they are ready to go again! Reconstructive surgery is a real-life miracle in the lives of so many unfortunate patients ostracized from their own society and who would otherwise never have a shot at a normal life. Along with birth defects, a high number of these deformities are caused by severe burning due to the lack of emergency services available in this area.
Providing educational supplies for a small school in the poorest slum of a small inland city serving 150 disadvantaged kids. Chief among the school’s many needs is a copy machine. $1,000 would allow the school to upgrade from using outdated mimeographs, and greatly increase the amount of educational materials they can produce.
